Samsung Tri-Fold: Just when we thought Samsung was done releasing new devices for this year, there is another leak from a top company executive who spoke about another highly anticipated device in their interaction with the media.
Only a few days have passed since the Korean tech giant dropped its premium foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7; there was another affordable variant of the Z Flip 7 called the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE that was showcased as well. Now Samsung is working on its tri-fold phones as well, said Minseok Kang, Vice President, Product Planning, Samsung Electronics.
It seems like Samsung is going to push the envelope further when it comes to foldables and is currently working on perfecting its tri-fold, which will be the next big step for the tech giant. "In terms of tri-folding, the device is under development," Kang expressed. He has further added that, "We are evaluating key points for the final decision to commercialise the device. I can say that our current target is to launch this device by the end of this year." "When we launch a new device or new form factor, important considerations include completeness in the form factor itself and ensuring user satisfaction, along with readiness for mass production."
Now a tri-fold smartphone won't be new to the market, as its Chinese competitors, such as Huawei, already have a tri-fold smartphone, the Mate X Ultimate, and others like Xiaomi and Honour are also catching up.
As far as foldables go, Samsung had released its first foldable device in 2019, and the latest launches mark its seventh edition. Samsung has come a long way when it comes to foldable tech. To begin with, it has decreased its thickness considerably over the years; the first foldable by Samsung had a thickness of about 17.1 mm, and the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a thickness of 8.9 mm, which is almost half of what it was. When unfolded, the thickness is 4.2 mm for the latest foldable. "Definitely, this represents a major leap in foldable design," Kang said, also adding, "The weight of the Fold 7 is just 215 grams." Definitely, it is lighter than our competitors' premium devices. It is a difference you can feel every day in your pocket or in your hand." The new foldable might even be lighter than many conventional bar-type devices.
Kang sees the Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 as a major milestone in the evolution of foldables, helping push the category from niche to mainstream. In his view, they now offer more than conventional bar phones in some areas.
At the same time, he made it clear that foldables aren’t replacing bar phones anytime soon — both will continue to coexist.
"The Fold could potentially become mainstream, but the standard bar phone will continue to meet user needs. I do not believe that one will completely replace the other; both can coexist and fulfil different user requirements," Kang said.
