WhatsApp users can now chat with the popular AI, ChatGPT, not just with text, but also through voice messages and images. This new feature was recently announced by OpenAI, making it easier for people to ask questions using voice or pictures. They shared the update on X, saying: “You can now upload images when asking a question,” and “You can also communicate with ChatGPT using voice messages.”
Additionally, WhatsApp users will soon be able to link their ChatGPT accounts (whether Free, Plus, or Pro) to get access to extra features. However, OpenAI hasn’t confirmed when exactly these changes will roll out.
To use the new features, just add the number 1-800-242-8478 to your contacts. From there, you can interact with ChatGPT directly in WhatsApp—no need to open a browser or switch apps anymore. It’s pretty much the same experience you’d get on the web version, but all within the WhatsApp app.

Previously, the only option for using ChatGPT on WhatsApp was through text-based chats, which began in December 2024. Now, with the added voice and image functions, the experience is far more interactive.
In the US, there’s also word that users will be able to enjoy 15 minutes of free use with ChatGPT. After that, those who sign in with their OpenAI account can keep using it for longer.
And on top of all that, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that would allow users to open “view once” media files on linked devices—like laptops or tablets—making it easier to view media without needing to grab your phone.
It’s clear WhatsApp is ramping up its features, so stay tuned for more updates!
