*Objective of Special Intensive Revision*
The Special Intensive Revision(SIR)
The aim of the Election Commission of India is to make its electoral rolls error-free through the Special Intensive Revision. The goal is to make sure that no eligible citizen is left out of the voters’ list, while also removing the names of those who are not eligible to be members of the voters’ list. The move comes as the commission readies itself for the big election.
States and UTs under SIR
The Special Intensive Revision will be conducted in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, & Lakshadweep.
These states and union territories were chosen because they had a high percentage of mapped electors, as well as administrative preparedness. This includes the presence of trained Booth Level Officers, District Magistrates, or Electoral Registration Officers.
Maharashtra has been left out owing to an order from the Supreme Court that the state has to hold local body polls by January 31, 2026. Kerala has also not been included in the present SIR as the local body election discussion is still pending.
Process and Verification Norms: Explained
In accordance with the SIR pan-India model, the citizens will no longer have to provide any documents during the enumeration process. Also, to record parental or relatives’ information from the last SIR exercise carried out between 2002 and 2004, there will be a new field added to the enrollment forms.
Voters for whom their electoral rolls cannot be traced back to earlier ones will receive notices to show their eligibility in terms of certain documents. Aadhaar Cards can only be shown for identity purposes, but not for proving eligibility.
About 70 to 80 percent of the voting population are expected to have a logical digital connection to the previous electoral rolls, according to the ECI. Only one form for each elector will be required to be signed during the process.
What is Special Intensive Revision?
The Special Intensive Revision is a meticulous, time-bound, house-to-house verification process carried out by Booth Level Officers. This enables the addition of new voters, the deletion of ineligible electoral rolls, and the correction of existing electoral rolls to ensure a clean list of voters.
