In the first quarter (Q1) of this year, the smartphone market in India shipped 34 million units, up 11.5 per cent year over year. Meanwhile, a report released on Tuesday stated that Apple recorded a record first-quarter shipment, rising 19 per cent YoY. IDC reports that the premium market shrank by 21 per cent in terms of units and held a 2 per cent share. Vivo has been the top selling brand in the Q1 with 17.2 per cent year-on-year growth followed by Samsung and Xiaomi. 

During the quarter, there were a number of new product launches in a number of price ranges, along with an increase in promotional activity, especially for premium items. In order to promote affordability, brands kept focusing on microlending programmes, according to Upasana Joshi, Senior Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India.

Apple's steady expansion in India outside of the holiday season can be attributed to price reductions, exclusive offers on e-tailer platforms, and alluring financing alternatives. Apple's shipments to the nation included 56 per cent of iPhone 14 and 15, indicating the company's increased focus on domestic production.

Shipments to the mass budget category increased by 22 per cent YoY to 48 per cent from 44 per cent in the previous year. The top three brands were vivo, Xiaomi and Samsung, making up 53 per cent share in this segment, the report mentioned. POCO has surpassed OnePlus to become the 6th largest Android smartphone brand in India, according to the Q124 IDC Report.  Here are the top selling brands.

About 23 million 5G smartphones were shipped in the quarter and the share of 5G devices increased to 69 per cent, up from 46 per cent in the same quarter last year.
