JE Technology Desk: Twitter drew mixed reactions to the announcement of post-reading limits for users. And in the latest move, the company is all set to limit the number of Direct Messages (DMs) an unverified user can send on the microblogging app daily. According to Twitter, the step aims to reduce spam activity on the platform.

The announcement tweet is silent on the number of messages a free user can send. According to the Twitter Help Center, these changes are already in effect from July 21. A user must subscribe to Twitter Blue to send more messages. For the unversed, DMs are the "private side" of the platform for conversations.

"We'll soon be implementing some changes in our effort to reduce spam in Direct Messages. Unverified accounts will have daily limits on the number of DMs they can send," the Twitter Support account said.

Musk has voiced concerns about spam bots since last year, even before acquiring Twitter. In April 2022, he tweeted: "We will defeat the spam bots or die trying!" While the company highlights its policy against spam as a reason for the change (and similar changes), it can be suspected as a medium to attract viewers to its Blue subscription. Twitter has taken away features from unverified users in the past. Among the popular ones include SMS-based two-factor authentication. The reason quoted was curbing spam on the platform.

Speaking of more features, the social media giant could soon get a feature that will let users publish "very long, complex articles with mixed media," according to Elon Musk. A user will be able to "publish a book" with the feature if they want. It will be a rehashed version of Notes. The details about whether the option will be available to all users or only verified subscribers remain unclear. As for the current limit, verified users can post tweets of up to 10,000 characters.

As for more updates, the company also introduced a new setting for DMs in its effort to curb spam messages. You can read more on this here.
