Spotify officially rolled out its Lossless Listening feature, providing audio streaming in high resolution as 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC format. The feature includes a more detailed and richer sound quality by utilising a less compressed sound format, which is for listeners who demand premium listening experiences.

The feature will be rolled out across mobile, desktop, and tablet platforms, as well as on hardware from Spotify Connect-certified brands such as Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser.

In a statement, Spotify explained, "We've spent time building this feature with an emphasis on quality, usability, and transparency throughout, so you're always in the know about the processes behind it. With Lossless, our paid subscribers will now get an even better listening experience."

Spotify VP Gustav Gyllenhammar also sounded upbeat about the release of lossless audio to Premium subscribers.

What Is Lossless Audio?

'Lossless audio' refers to compressed music files that maintain all of the original recording’s details. According to audio company Sonos, this format retains the full fidelity of the sound without compromising quality.

Spotify’s new feature allows users to adjust audio quality settings for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads. Options include low, normal, high, and very high, with data usage visible for each setting.

How to Enable Lossless Audio on Spotify

To enable the Lossless Listening feature, users can do the following:

  • Tap the profile picture at the top left of the app.
  • Navigate to Settings & Privacy, then click on Media Quality.
  • Select where to turn on lossless audio — options are Wi-Fi, cellular, or downloads.

Users will have to turn the feature on by hand in each device. Upon activation, an indicator of losslessness will be shown in the Now Playing view or bar and the Connect Picker.

Spotify's Listening Recommendation

Spotify suggests, "For the best and most seamless listening experience, we recommend streaming lossless music over Wi-Fi on wired headphones or speakers with a non-Bluetooth connection, like Spotify Connect. At the moment, Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth to send lossless audio, so there is compression of the signal prior to transmission."

Availability and Rollout Timeline

Lossless Listening is being introduced in phases to Spotify Premium listeners in certain areas. The firm says that Premium subscribers will receive an alert when the feature is available to them. Spotify hopes to have the feature in more than 50 countries by October.
