Telegram Ban In India: Telegram CEO Pavel Durov's detention in France has raised serious questions about the functioning of the messaging app, which has, over the years, been accused of allowing illegal activities on its platform. Durov, earlier this week, was detained by the French authorities allegedly for child exploitation and violating app moderation laws in the country. Now, amid the buzz over Telegram, the Indian government is reportedly investigating the platform and considering appropriate actions (including a ban) to combat illegal activities including the spread of adult videos and child pornography. This is not the first time the platform has been condemned for its illegal activities. Here are the six unlawful activities that have been a dilemma for Indian authorities.
1. Child Exploitation and Illegal Pornography:
Telegram has made its negative image in the Indian market because of the child porn circulation. Various reports indicate that the platform is unable to remove the malicious groups and they are still operating sharing explicit media.
2. Pirated Content:
Telegram is also known for sharing the pirated content to the users. The application is known for sharing a wide range of pirated movies, music, software, eBooks and other things.
3. Hate Speech
As per the reports, the platform is also used to spread hate speech and extremist propaganda because of its encrypted messaging services.
4. Terrorism
The platform is allegedly used by the terrorist organisations to communicate, plan attacks and much more. The organisations also allegedly share the instructions for attacks, and distribute videos and much more on the platform. However, Telegram has been making efforts to remove certain channels and users but lack strong content moderation policies.
5. Gambling
Telegram is reportedly under investigation by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) over the gambling, extortion and other criminal activities on the platform.
