Meta Threads, a direct rival to Elon Musk's X, has been in the news for frequent tweaks and updates. In that series, the company stated it plans to release its application programming interface (API) access to developers in June after testing it with select developers. As per a post from developer Jesse Chen, the company has been working with several developers and plans to let brands and creators use it at scale.
This will help developers, creators, and more users manage communities using third-party apps for better accessibility. The API will let users authenticate, publish and fetch content published using these tools. The company will also enable reply moderation, insights capabilities and more soon. The engineer said it is currently testing the functionality with Hootsuite, Social News Desk, Sprinklr, Sprout Social, Techmeme and a few other developers.
"We've been building the Threads API to enable creators, developers and brands to manage their Threads presence at scale and easily share fresh, new ideas with their communities from their favourite third-party applications," the Threads post noted. This will let users create third-party apps for the platform and publish posts directly on Threads.

"The API currently enables users to authenticate, publish threads, and fetch the content they posted through these tools – and soon, we will enable reply moderation and insights capabilities...While we will limit access to the Beta at this time, we hope to make the API broadly available by the end of June," Chen said. More features will be added to the suite later.
For context, in October 2024, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri shared that the team was developing API but worried that it may lead to the prevalence of more published content than user-generated one. Meanwhile, third-party apps such as Hootsuite and Tweetbot can help users post on platforms like Reddit and Twitter. However, in the past, these sites have been against this via activities such as API access removal or making it expensive.
