TINDER, a popular dating app, was used as a medium to scam a woman who works for a private company in Bengaluru. The 37-year-old reportedly lost around Rs 4.5 lakh to a male friend she encountered on the app, the police said. A report was filed in the Whitefield cyber crime police station.
According to The Indian Express, the lady bonded with Advik Chopra (a Mumbai-based man) on Tinder a month back. Chopra falsely told her that he works as a medical professional in the UK. Intrigued by the profile, the lady showed interest. And it resulted in a match.
"Unbeknownst to her, Chopra had registered under a false identity. Intrigued by his profile, she reciprocated the interest, resulting in a match," an officer said.
The woman said the man gradually cemented trust during the conversations. And she fell in love. The scammer expressed his intention to meet and said he would fly to Bengaluru from Dubai. Some days later, the lady received a call from an unknown phone number. The person on the other end claimed to be an Airports Authority of India official.
This fraud official informed her that Chopra had unaccounted cash when he arrived at the Delhi airport. A payment of Rs 68,500 was demanded so that he could reach Bengaluru. In the next instance, she was asked to transfer Rs 1.8 lakh and Rs 2.06 lakh as processing fees, the report adds.
While the woman, failing to identify the scam, believed the hoax official and wished to get Chopra towards a sailing exit, did as said. However, the suspicion grew when another demand of six lakh for GST charges erupted from the other end.
As the woman enquired further, all connections snapped. She finally understood the staged scam. Advik Chopra's Tinder account was deleted later.
The recent case acts as a reminder of the possible scams that are taking place in India. To avoid falling for such scams, make sure you do a detailed background verification and avoid involving in monetary exchanges.
