Google introduced a number of new Android improvements, including a new spam detection capability, at Google I/O 2024. The tech giant developed a unique call-monitoring feature driven by Gemini Nano, the company's strong language model. The new function attempts to notify consumers of suspected scam calls in real-time and advise them to terminate such calls.
With the number of spam calls targeting people increasing, the corporation appears to have listened to customer concerns. By using its sophisticated language model to identify fraudulent language and conversation patterns indicative of scam calls, the company hopes to counteract the threat posed by scammers who frequently pose as bank representatives or authority figures in order to steal hard-earned money.

According to the Verge report, Gemini Nano would monitor calls on the smartphone and prioritise call monitoring that takes place directly on the user's device, while also providing real-time notifications for suspicious calls. For example, if the caller requests personal information such as OTPs or passwords or pressures the user to make immediate payments, Gemini Nano will alert the user to protect themselves from potential scams.
The software giant has yet to announce a specific release date for the tool, but it has stated that customers will be able to use it later this year. Users will also have the opportunity to control and use the functionality manually.
