Because of the close integration with ChatGPT, Apple’s Intelligence system updated Siri to become a more competent AI assistant. With the updates of macOS Sequoia 15.2 and iOS 18.2, users were enabled to have ChatGPT-powered conversations with Siri both through voice and text.

This serves as part of Apple's attempt at integrating AI across all its products. The interesting part about this update is that it works on converting Siri into an interface for ChatGPT, completely unleashing its capability for typed inputs through the Type to Siri feature.

How does it work?

To get started, users must:

  • Have Apple Intelligence installed on a supported device (Apple Silicon Mac or iPhone 15 Pro and later).
  • Enable Siri and Apple Intelligence from System Settings (on Mac) or Settings(on iOS).
  • Turn on the ChatGPT Extension under the Extensions section.
  • Optional: Activate Confirm ChatGPT Requests, which asks you before sending any request to ChatGPT.

With these features activated, users can call upon Siri either by voice or keyboard. On Mac, Command key double tap brings up the Type to Siri prompt. On iOS/a simple double-tap in any text field does so too.

If Siri can’t deal with a specific prompt on its own, it will ask:

“Do you want me to use ChatGPT to answer that?”

After this, you can choose either Search The Web or Use ChatGPT.

How does it make Siri smarter?

  • System-wide typing: Siri’s responsiveness has improved as she now manages Step Chat typed queries at the level of intelligence of ChatGPT.
  • No need for extra apps: Everything is processed through the Apple interface, which makes things smoother.
  • Cleaner handoff: If it is clear that some form of assistance is required, Siri forwards prompts to Chat GPT without any user interactions.
  • Privacy in mind: You get to decide when and how Siri checks with her external helper.

Things to keep in mind

Don’t expect lightning-fast speed because routing through Apple servers to Chat GPT adds some lag. And while it does sound smarter now, the app's heavy lifting is still being done by OpenAI’s models. This hybrid setup prioritises convenience more than AI equals.
Even so, this marks an important integration: one of the most criticised voice assistants had been regarded as slow until now gets a brain boost from one of the best in the AI game, thanks to OpenAI. That integration works across the system is a huge plus, considering there isn't even a single third-party app in sight.
