What Is The Jolla Phone? Take A Look At Linux’s New Smartphone Venture

Following a long hiatus, Finnish company Jolla is back with a new smartphone. Dubbed the Jolla Phone, the device is touted as an “independent European Do It Together (DIT) Linux phone”, emphasising its underpinnings of privacy and European technology independence.

A Real Linux Phone

Jolla introduces the Jolla Phone as a "real Linux phone", running "actual Linux", not some pseudo-version. It runs Sailfish OS 5 at its core, an operating system focused on privacy and marketed as the "only European mobile operating system".

It also points out that there is no tracking in Sailfish OS, no calling home, and no hidden analytics. Additionally, the users are free to install Android apps too while still retaining full control, which enables a fully de-Googled experience whenever needed or desirable.

Specifications and Features

-Processor and Memory: It has a high-performance MediaTek SoC, coupled with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is expandable via microSD.

-Display: 6.36-inch FullHD AMOLED display, 390 ppi; Gorilla Glass protection.

-Cameras: The back houses a 50MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide camera. Front camera resolution is not specified.

-Battery: 5,500 mAh user-replaceable battery, with a replaceable back cover available in Snow White, Kaamos Black and The Orange.

-Other Features: Side-mounted fingerprint scanner, NFC, 5G connectivity, dual-SIM support, and physical privacy switch to disable microphone, camera, Bluetooth, and more.

-Jolla also promises at least 5 years of OS support for the Jolla Phone.

Pre-Order Details and Pricing

Production of the Jolla Phone depends on receiving at least 2,000 pre-orders by January 4, 2026. More than 1,200 have already been received at the time of writing.

-Prepayment for order: €99 deposit

-Full Price: €499 for preorders, with regular pricing expected between €599 and €699

Special Edition: A special back cover will be gifted to the pre-order customers as a token of appreciation.

Jolla has promised to refund pre-orders if the target is not met, but given the current numbers, this phone will most probably enter production.

Availability and Delivery

Deliveries are expected by the end of H1 2026. Initially, the Jolla Phone will be available in the UK, Norway, Switzerland, and the EU. Global availability will follow depending on demand.
