WhatsApp, an instant messaging application, tests new features regularly across platforms ranging from smartphones to PCs. In a recent move, the company is now testing animated emojis using Lottie on the Android app. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is undergoing testing in the beta "2.24.15.15" build. Available to select beta testers, animated emojis may reach more users in the coming weeks.

According to the report, the company was earlier spotted working on a similar feature on the WhatsApp for Desktop version. This feature can enhance the chatting experience by allowing users to send animated and dynamic emojis for added expression and zing in conversation. Beta testers can update their app from the Google Play Store to try the feature in the testing build.

Based on the video media shared by the WhatsApp tracker, the animated emojis are designed via the Lottie library. This ensures they maintain quality while being scalable and lightweight. Plus, it can enhance the visual appearance of conversations compared to static messages without affecting the performance.

WABetaInfo noted all emojis may not support the animation effect. Hence, while sending emojis, only the dynamic versions will appear in an animated form and others will continue to appear in static mode. Android beta testers can try sending out a few popular emojis such as the face with tears of joy, the rolling on the floor laughing emoji or the red heart emoji to try the feature in action.

WhatsApp may plan to implement more animated versions of emojis in the future. Beta testers must keep their app updated to ensure they get the feature at the earliest. As for other beta updates on Android, the company is also working on a security checkup feature to let users easily review and manage security settings such as passkey, email and two-step verification.
