WhatsApp has announced that it has banned over 79 lakh accounts in India last month. Meta-owned instant messaging platform, in compliance with the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, bans accounts that violate the rules and regulations. In the 1st quarter, the platform banned over 2 crore accounts.

According to the company's monthly compliance report, between March 1 and March 31, 7,954,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned, and 1,430,000 of those accounts were terminated proactively—that is, before any user reports were received.

With over 500 million users in India, the messaging app received a record 12,782 complaint reports in March, with 11 of those reports being "actioned."

"Accounts Actioned" refers to cases in which WhatsApp addressed the complaint and, as a result, either banned or reinstated an account that had been previously banned.

"We address every complaint we receive, with the exception of those that are thought to be duplicates of earlier tickets. According to the firm, an account is considered "actioned" when it is suspended or reinstated following a complaint.

From February 1 to February 29, "7,628,000 accounts" were banned by the corporation.

Prior to any user reports, almost 1,424,000 of these accounts were proactively banned.

The company states that "we employ a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and experts in law enforcement, online safety, and technology developments to oversee these efforts" in addition to safety features and controls.

Meanwhile, the platform may add a new conversation filtering option to assist users manage their data more effectively. The feature is presently available in beta. It will apparently add three filters to the Manage Storage options, allowing users to examine chat- or channel-specific storage on the program.
