Will Cathcart, who has led the messaging platform for more than seven years, has announced that he is stepping down from the role. During his time at WhatsApp, the platform expanded several of its privacy-focused features, rolled out support for companion devices and continued pushing end-to-end encryption across more parts of the service.
But while Cathcart's departure is significant, the bigger headline is who is replacing him.

Kunal Shah Is Taking Over WhatsApp
Meta has named Kunal Shah as WhatsApp's new global head, putting the founder of Cred, in charge of one of the world's most widely used apps.
For Indian tech watchers, Shah hardly needs an introduction. Before launching Cred, he built Freecharge into one of India's best-known digital payments platforms and later became one of the country's most recognisable startup founders.
Now he's stepping into a very different role.
WhatsApp already reaches billions of users worldwide, but Meta sees the platform as much more than a messaging app. With payments, business messaging and commerce becoming increasingly important, Shah's background in fintech could prove particularly relevant.
A Big Change At Cred Too
The move also means a leadership transition at Cred.
Alongside the WhatsApp announcement, Shah confirmed that he will step down as CEO of the fintech company he founded in 2018. Miten Sampat will take over as interim CEO.
The timing is notable because Meta is also becoming a minority shareholder in Cred through a $900 million strategic investment, further strengthening ties between the two companies.
Why This Move Matters
For years, WhatsApp's biggest focus has been private messaging. Under Cathcart, the platform doubled down on encryption and privacy, helping it grow into a service used by more than three billion people.
Shah now inherits a very different challenge.
The messaging app remains dominant in many markets, but Meta has been steadily looking for ways to build larger businesses around it, particularly in payments and commercial services.
That is one reason Shah's appointment stands out. His experience comes from building products around money, transactions and consumer engagement, areas that could play a bigger role in WhatsApp's next phase.
The Next Chapter For WhatsApp
In his first comments after the announcement, Shah suggested that WhatsApp's biggest opportunities still lie ahead.
He said there is still a massive gap between what the platform is today and what it could eventually become.
Exactly what that vision looks like remains to be seen. But after more than seven years under Cathcart, WhatsApp is about to enter a new chapter, this time with an Indian entrepreneur at the centre of it.
