WhatsApp, which has been adding a slew of new features, is now reportedly working on a new third-party chat feature for Android phones, which will allow users to communicate with others even if they are using different applications. The Meta-owned instant messaging platform is planning to introduce this new feature to comply with the new stricter European Union (EU) regulations.
For instance, even without a WhatsApp account, someone might communicate with a WhatsApp user through the Signal app. The addition of the capability comes shortly after the European Commission verified that Meta satisfies the criteria for "gatekeeper" status under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires that messaging apps like WhatsApp support interoperability by March 2024. The feature is still being developed and is not yet ready, according to the report, and it appears to be empty and inaccessible to users as of now.
To keep providing its interoperability service in the European Union, WhatsApp needs six months to make the app comply with the new regulations, the report further added. It is yet unknown, though, whether this capability will eventually be available in nations outside of the EU.
Meanwhile, according to reports, WhatsApp is developing "filter groups chat" for Android to provide users more control over their chats and make it simpler to organise and prioritise their communications. Users will be able to get a list of their groups by eliminating individual chats thanks to the new feature.

Users will also notice that the Personal category, which formerly contained groups and communities, has been renamed Contacts to better distinguish between individual and group chats. Contrarily, the new "Contacts" filter will only display certain chats.
