WhatsApp, an instant messaging app, continues to grab headlines in the media for introducing and testing new features. After announcing the arrival of AI-based stickers, the company is reportedly experimenting with an option to make it harder for bad actors to discover the location based on the IP address during calls.

According to WABetaInfo, the option is rolling out on Android beta version '2.23.21.12' or later and iOS version '23.21.1.70'. The feature will be released to more testers in the future. With the new privacy call toggle, accounts can bundle in an extra layer of security for calls and protect their location and Internet Protocol (IP) address from malicious actors.

The toggle is available in the Advanced section in the privacy settings option. The description of the "Protect IP address in calls" feature read: "To make it harder for people to infer your location, calls on this device will be securely relayed through WhatsApp servers. This will reduce call quality."

Due to the routing process and encryption to the Meta-owned servers, the call quality is slightly degraded. However, it will offer users protection from location tracking by unknown users. Enrolled testers on Android can head to the Google Play Store to update the app and check whether it's available on their device. iOS users can update their WhatsApp via test flight to check for feature availability.

New UI For Android Beta Users

Release on Android beta "2.23.21.12," the revamped UI is available for some testers on the app. WhatsApp is aligning its approach towards Material Design 3 with new icons and colours. The modern experience offers a better visual appeal with a fresh look for chat bubbles and floating action buttons within the UI. The three tab options (Chats, Updates, Calls) of the current update will move to the bottom.
