Whatsapp looks like it’s close to introducing a feature people have been begging for – the ability to set a username and forget about unwanted messages. Meta's messaging service is now experimenting with a way to claim usernames matching their ID in its Android app, hinting at a route to clearer communication.
The feature was spotted in the WhatsApp Beta for Android 2.25.28.12, suggesting that the company is in fact gearing up to bring it out soon. The feature will not work at present but is a clear indication that WhatsApp is looking to give users greater control of who can add them to chat groups.
How Username Reservation Works
Once fully implemented, users will be able to reserve their preferred usernames under the Profile tab in WhatsApp settings. This option is expected to work as a precursor to the complete username system, allowing early access to secure desired usernames before the full feature is launched.

The username system will have a username key that works as the private ciphered combination. Only the person with both username and key will be able to send messages, thus automatically reducing unwanted communication and spamming.
This arrangement aims to provide a more private and selective messaging system for users, with fewer random messages from strangers. It’s also designed to combat impersonation and make sure that each user has a unique username.
Restrictions on Usernames
WABetaInfo, a trusted feature tracker, reported that the username system will have some restrictions to maintain security and clarity:
- Usernames cannot begin with “www” to prevent impersonation of official websites.
- Each username must include at least one letter.
- Some characters (numbers 0-9, points and underscores) will be allowed.
These steps are in place to help keep usernames streamlined, recognisable and secure.
Timeline and Availability
This feature has yet to be fully implemented or even made available for beta testing via Google Play Beta Program. As is typical with WhatsApp features introduced slowly over time, reserved usernames may only become an option for specific users at first before eventually becoming universal.

If implemented, this system could represent one of the greatest changes to how WhatsApp moderates and controls messages on its platform, giving people more power over who can or cannot contact them and reducing spam or abuse incidents.
What This Means for Users
Millions of WhatsApp users will be happy to see the addition of usernames and their reservation option. Right now, the app is based on phone numbers as a primary ID, exposure of which could potentially lead to spamming by strangers. For usernames, WhatsApp will offer a more secure, private option that is not tied to the convenience of the messaging service.
What we're able to now is future proof ourselves by taking the username we think will look the best. This can prevent all that lame user name drama when it does go public if you start reserving your look and feel now.
WhatsApp’s username reservation may help move the service closer to giving users more privacy and control. The timing of the expansion isn't clear, but Android testing suggests the Meta-owned messaging app is actively getting ready to shake up how users interact.
