WhatsApp, an instant messaging platform, tests new features at regular intervals with beta updates across platforms. In the latest testing build for iPhones, the company is now experimenting with AR features for call effects and filters, according to WABetaInfo. The features are rolling out in the iOS "24.17.10.74" version for eligible testers. Beta users can update WhatsApp via TestFlight to check for the availability of these features.

According to the report, the company was spotted testing a similar AR functionality for video calls on Android last month. This change can bring added personalisation and interactivity to calls and make video calls more fun and engaging. As per the screengrab shared in the report, beta testers may see new tools such as filters, backgrounds, and more for an improved video calling experience.

The video interface features include dynamic facial filters to enhance the appearance in real-time and modify the colour tone of the feed. Plus, the interface will offer background editing to blur the surroundings or replace them with a preset image. Another notable addition is the low-light mode which may improve the lighting conditions of the feed in dim surroundings.

The low-light mode can improve the experience of calling for people who engage frequently in calls in dark environments or where natural lighting is lacking. Another mode in the interface is the touch-up mode for a subtle filter for skin smoothing and a more polished appearance in calls, WABetaInfo added. This can be helpful for people who wish to "look their best" in calls.

All these features (filters, backgrounds, low-light and touch-up mode) can help boost the customisation available in WhatsApp video calls and suit the varying needs of the users. The news tracker added that the Meta app will remember the previous preset and settings so that users do not have to rejig these settings repeatedly.
