WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature for iPhone users that will make profile statuses dynamic and time-sensitive. Dubbed the disappearing status, the feature made its debut among Android beta testers and has now surfaced in iOS beta version 25.23.10.78 through TestFlight.

How the Feature Works

The vanish status feature enables users to put an expiration time on their "About" description. Rather than having to do this manually by changing or deleting old statuses, users can select fixed-duration timers — from 30 minutes up to one week — or pick a custom time span lasting up to one month.

This works particularly well for short-term updates. For example, a person going into a meeting can create a status such as "In a meeting" that self-destructs when the timer reaches zero. Business travellers can add a suitcase emoji to inform contacts they're away, and it will self-destruct once the trip is over.

Where It Shows Up

The temporary status will be seen in several locations within the app. Not only is it visible on the profile page, but also within conversations, chat info screens, and even within chat headers, where it toggles with the last seen status. This way, contacts always get the most apt information without the users having to deal with it every time.

Privacy and Control

Most critically, WhatsApp has preserved privacy safeguards. Users are able to decide who is able to view their disappearing status via available privacy options. Users will also be able to edit or delete statuses before they disappear. When the countdown expires, the update is no longer visible but is stored individually in a private archive, and users can return to old updates if necessary.

Rollout Timeline

The feature that removes the status is available as of now just in beta and is set to be released more broadly in the coming weeks as part of future WhatsApp updates.
