OpenAI's board has decided to chart a new course for the company's leadership, opting to appoint former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as the interim CEO instead of reinstating Sam Altman, who was shockingly fired on Friday.

The board finally decided against bringing Altman back as CEO of OpenAI after hours of negotiations. It has now been announced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella that Sam Altman will be joining the company and working on the AI research team.

Ilya Sutskever, Co-founder and board director of OpenAI has revealed that Shear will take over as interim CEO in the meantime, succeeding Mira Murati. Murati, who openly supported Altman, was fired a few hours after inviting him to a Sunday meeting with OpenAI executives at the company's headquarters in San Francisco.

Emmett Shear, who is recognised for having contributed to the founding of both Justin.tv and Twitch, served as the company's CEO until March of this year. Shear is well-known in the computer industry. She received her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Yale University. Apart from giving business guidance, he was named one of Forbes Magazine's 30 Under 30 in 2012 and joined Y Combinator as a part-time partner in 2011.

After his unexpected firing on Friday, Shear's appointment signifies a major change in OpenAI's leadership and the end of Altman's possible comeback. The board had dismissed Altman on the grounds that he had not been consistently honest in his communications.
