WHILE WWDC 2023 is around the corner, we have witnessed details about a bunch of hardware and software products that could launch at the annual conference. Among the top-hyped products is Apple's Mixed Reality headset, which could run on xrOS - the operating system that will likely power the flagship device. While Apple is yet to drop any official hints concerning the software, here is everything the rumour mill has churned out so far.

AR/VR Headset: What is xrOS?

According to a Macrumors report, internal sources of the company have confirmed the OS will be named xrOS. It stands for 'extended reality' that tips at both virtual and augmented reality functions at the core of the MR headset.

Mark Gurman, Chief Correspondent Bloomberg, claims the company sees it as a product capable of gaming, watching and streaming videos, video chats, health updates, and even interacting with the world.

xrOS: Expected Interface and Looks

xrOS could be on the familiar lines as iOS. However, interaction with the software will be completely different when weighed against iPhone or iPad. The news outlet expects a dedicated Home Screen with apps and widgets that may be customisable and can be arranged based on user preference. It will be visual on a crisp 4K resolution OLED screen that may have a pixel density of 4,000 PPI for a next-level immersive experience.

A wearer's eyes and hands will likely be monitored by 12+ optical camera sensors on the headset. The wearer could gaze at an item on the screen to select it and use their hands to do more operations.

Moreover, the company is also reportedly working on an 'in-air typing feature' that could allow users to type through hand movements.

xrOS: Tipped apps

The software could have a reworked version of the Apple apps like Safari, Messages, Maps, Apple Music, Photos, Apple TV+, and more. Plus, it may have a redesigned interface of FaceTime optimised for the headset that could have an avatar clone that would mimic the facial and gestures of the wearer.

Moreover, the custom-built App Store will allow users to explore more apps in VR/AR environments.

xrOS: Expected debut date

We might get to see the official first look of the xrOS at WWDC 2023.
