X Down Today: X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, went down for many users worldwide in the early hours of Friday, May 23. The issue first surfaced around 1 A.M. IST, with users turning to DownDetector to report problems accessing the app and navigating the website.

Reports on DownDetector showed a spike in complaints, and although things appear to have stabilized in India, the outage continues to impact users in other parts of the world — including the US, Canada, France, the UK, Peru, Malaysia, and Germany. Currently the app shows that dissruptions are on the rise again today from 12 PM onwards and cases of instances with outages is increasing.

“Some systems are experiencing degraded performance,” reads a message on X’s developer platform status page. The platform also noted a “Site-wide outage” and confirmed that the incident is “still ongoing.”

While some X users are able to check their direct messages as usual, others are facing blank inboxes or error messages like “Cannot retrieve messages. Please try again later.” For a few in India, the issue is more general — they’re being met with a “Something isn’t right. Please try again later” prompt when attempting to log in.

The trouble began nearly 12 hours ago, with complaints continuing to roll in as frustrated users took to the platform — those who could access it — to express their dissatisfaction. Some voiced anger over the lack of customer service, while others coped with memes.

The company’s engineering team acknowledged the situation in a post:
“X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today. We are experiencing a data center outage and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.”

This marks the second major outage for X this year. On March 10, the platform went offline for roughly 30 minutes, during which thousands of users were locked out of both the app and the website. In September 2024, X experienced a longer downtime, going dark globally for over an hour.

What Caused the Outage?

Some users around the globe are still facing problems while accessing X.com, but it seems that the major problem has been dealt with.

According to some reports, the cause of the issue seems to be a fire that broke out in the data centre in Hillsboro, Oregon, that happened on Thursday morning, yesterday. A fire broke out at a data centre operated by X, prompting emergency crews to respond. While the exact cause hasn't been confirmed, early reports suggest it may have started in a battery room. The incident has reportedly disrupted services for around 6,000 users worldwide.
