Android Auto YouTube feature update: There's an exciting upgrade for Android Auto users: YouTube is finally going to appear on your car screens, but it's not the kind of full-fledged experience that you might be thinking of; it's just about the audio experience right now. Yes, it does sound like a small step, but it's probably in the right direction.

What's In The Update?

With this latest update YouTube has now been given a place in your Android Auto media controls. This will allow users to take in hand all the multimedia controls associated with it, like play, pause, and video skipping, just like any music app you would have used before in your car's dashboard. Although watching videos is still not an option right now, the infotainment system will just have controls in it for now.

This feature is basically for background listening only, for now. With YouTube's core function missing, this for now acts like a podcast or music app like Spotify. This can come in handy for people trying to cover up a long discussion or interview pieces, so for most things that don't need your complete visual attention, this new update has got you covered. This is also integrated further with steering wheel controls so you can swipe or swap tracks with ease.

For now the feature is quite basic and lacks much complexity, but I guess it's only for the good, as visuals could distract you while driving. Another pain point for some users would be the missing fast forward control, and the feature does not support thumbnails either. So the music experience is going to be quite basic.

What's the catch?

Yes, there's one, and here's the fact that you need a subscription to run this basic feature. Background playback is a premium feature of YouTube, and if you don't have it then, the sad news is that it will not work. So for now this remains a small step in what could become a possibly larger integration of complete multimedia controls and features that YouTube comes with.
