YouTube Music, a popular music streaming platform of Google, introduces new features for users at regular intervals. In the latest move to improve the user experience, the company is now introducing the option to search by playing, singing or humming a track. This option is now rolling out on Android but not on iOS.
Spotted by 9To5Google, users can tap the magnifying glass icon on the top right. On the voice search window, eligible users will see a waveform symbol next to the mic icon. In comparison, YouTube offers the waveform icon after a user taps the mic icon and opts for the 'Song' option (available next to the 'Voice' button).

Like the video app, a gradient background appears when a user taps the waveform icon and asks users to "play, sing, or hum a song" to find the track online. For context, a similar capability was introduced for Search in 2020 and was available for Pixel devices using the Now Playing option. It debuted on YouTube in October 2024.
According to the report, Google deploys AI processing to match the sound to an original track. The result is displayed in a full-screen window with the album art, name of the song, artist, album and year with the option to Play or Save the track. Users can exit the screen using the cross mark or search for more results from the waveform icon at the bottom center.
YouTube Music started testing the feature in March. Something similar was available for users on Google Play Music for a long time. This server-side feature is reportedly available in the 7.02 version of the Android app. You must update the app from the Google Play Store to try out the feature. If you haven't received the option, you can wait to check back after a few days.
