Video streaming platform YouTube has announced a price hike on its Premium plans in India. The popular Rs 129 per month plan has now moved to Rs 149, implying a hike of 15.5 per cent. Not only that, the company increased the prices of other plans in the category. For context, the service was launched in India in 2019.
Here are the updated prices for a better context of the prices.
Individual (monthly): The monthly individual plan will now cost Rs 149. This plan witnessed a hike of Rs 20 as it was priced at Rs 129 earlier.
Student (monthly): The student plan moved to Rs 89 (earlier Rs 79) to witness a hike of Rs 10.
Family (monthly): The family pack increased to Rs 299 compared to Rs 189, implying a hike of Rs 110.
Individual prepaid (monthly): At a new cost of Rs 159, the plan witnessed a price hike of Rs 20 and was earlier available for 139.
Individual prepaid (quarterly): This plan now costs Rs 459 (Rs 399 earlier) to witness a hike of Rs 60.
Individual prepaid (annual): The one-year plan will retail for Rs 1,490. The recharge pack was earlier priced at Rs 1,290 to witness an increase of Rs 200.
According to YouTube, the existing subscription will end if Premium users take no action by the next billing date or after the new prices are effective. YouTube said the move is "to continue delivering great service and features". "We don't make these decisions lightly, but this update will allow us to continue to improve YouTube Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube," it added.

YouTube Premium users received emails to agree to the new prices earlier today. For context, the Premium service offers an ad-free experience, video downloads, background playback and YouTube Music benefits.
