Hyderabad Metro News:  In a piece of good news for commuters, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is set to expand the metro services significantly under Part A of the Phase-II expansion plan. This phase will introduce five new corridors, spanning 76.4 km across 54 stations, with an estimated cost of Rs 24,269 crore. These corridors primarily extend the existing network and include a dedicated Airport Metro corridor connecting the current three corridors, according to NVS Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) & HMRL.

The massive metro project is a joint venture between the Union and Telangana governments, with the state providing Rs 7,313 crore (30%) and the Union government contributing Rs 4,230 crore (18%) to the expansion of five more corridors.

“The advantage of this system is that at only around 2% interest rate compared to 9-10% rates of the Indian banks. The repayment period is also longer, up to 5–10 years of moratorium and 30 years for repayment. So, we have the advantage of over 40 years to repay this amount,” Reddy explained.

Reddy also said that demolition of the Old City Metro will begin in the fourth week of December, with preparatory work starting in January 2025. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is currently reviewing a detailed project report (DPR), comprehensive mobility plan (CMP), and alternatives analysis for this project.

- Shamshabad-RGIA Airport Corridor
- Raidurg-Kokapet Neopolis Corridor
- MGBS-Chandrayangutta (Old City) Corridor
- Miyapur-Patancheru Corridor
- LB Nagar Corridor

Hyderabad Metro Phase-II Cost Efficiency:

The per-kilometre cost for Phase-II stations is Rs 318 crore, significantly lower than metro systems in other cities. This cost efficiency is attributed to innovative elevated metro design and construction techniques.

Bengaluru: Rs 373–569 crore
Chennai: Rs 619–756 crore
Mumbai: Rs 543–1,492 crore
