In a major update for the residents of Hyderabad, the work on the proposed metro rail corridor between MGBS and Chandrayangutta in the Old City has picked up pace and is heading towards the start of construction.

On Sunday, Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited managing director N V S Reddy said that the pillar marking and road-widening works are progressing steadily.

He further added that the metro alignment has been planned to optimise the route with a minimal number of affected properties.

In a press release, Reddy said, "Daily review meetings are being held with engineering and revenue officials to closely monitor progress".

Speaking about the affected properties, Reddy said that 1,100 properties were to be affected as per the initial estimate. However, it was reduced to around 900 through engineering redesign and realignment efforts.

Currently, 412 properties have been issued the awards, and 380 of them have been demolished. Moreover, a comprehensive compensation of Rs 360 crore has been disbursed to affected property owners so far.

The Hyderabad Airport Metro has prepared a detailed action plan to expedite the acquisition of the remaining properties and complete demolitions swiftly, Reddy added.

Speaking about the construction of the line, Reddy said that the preparatory work has commenced, and the locations for the metro pillars,roughly at a distance of 25 metres (about 82 feet), have been identified, and ground marking is in progress.

A geotechnical agency has been engaged to conduct the soil bearing capacity tests for the stations and viaduct pillars. The authorities have completed a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) survey to finalise the location of the pillar and station while avoiding disturbance to historical or sensitive structures.

He further emphasised the arrangements being made to shift underground sewerage, water pipelines, stormwater drains, and overhead power lines in areas where pillars and stations will be constructedHe added that all overhead electricity lines along the corridor will be converted to underground cabling.
