Hyderabad Metro Phase II Update: The Metro rail extension through Hyderabad’s Old City is finally making progress. Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) has confirmed that technical groundwork is underway for the 7.5 km stretch between Mahatma Gandhi Bus Stand (Imlibun) and Chandrayangutta.

The Hindu report cited HAML Managing Director NVS Reddy as stating that, clearance works are moving at a fast pace despite interruptions caused by rains, festivals and local processions. Road widening to 100 feet, as planned in the city’s Master Plan, is in progress. So far, more than 550 structures have been demolished and around Rs 433 crore has been paid to affected property owners as compensation.

Through revised engineering plans, the number of properties to be acquired has been reduced from 1,100 to 886. This has helped minimise displacement and speed up work.

Hyderabad Old City Metro Update: Groundwork And surveys

Preparatory work such as shifting electrical cables, conducting soil and geo-technical tests and protecting heritage sites along the route is being prioritised. The construction of Metro pillars and stations will follow once the groundwork is completed.

Advanced technology is also being used to assist construction. Differential GPS (DGPS) surveys are helping in accurate digital mapping, while Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys are identifying underground utilities like water pipelines, sewage, and telecom lines for safe diversion. Milestone markers are being fixed every 100 metres to support construction.

Link To Airport Metro

This Old City stretch is part of a wider expansion plan to connect the existing Metro with the upcoming Airport Metro line. The 31 km dedicated Airport Metro from Raidurg to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is under construction and will provide fast access for travellers.

Once integrated, the Old City link will ease local travel and improve airport connectivity, meeting a long-pending demand from residents and businesses in the southern part of Hyderabad.
