Hyderabad Metro Update: In a bid to tackle increasing congestion, especially during peak hours, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is planning to upgrade its fleet by replacing the current three-coach services with bigger six-coach trains. To facilitate the expansion, officials have submitted a formal proposal to the government to purchase 10 new six-coach train sets.
This move is expected to reduce wait times and ensure a more convenient travel experience for the hundreds of daily passengers who rely on the network.
Hyderabad Metro Upgrade: HMRCL Plans 10 New Six-Coach Train Sets
- Currently, the Hyderabad Metro operates with three-coach trains. However, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Corporation (HMRL) is planning to roll out six-coach heavy metro trains to meet rising passenger demand.
- According to a One India report, the Hyderabad Metro expects to double its passenger capacity per trip with the deployment of six-coach trains, offering major relief to the persistent congestion, particularly during office rush hours.
- Speaking to One India, officials stated that the upgrade aims to reduce overcrowding inside trains, slash waiting times at platforms, and make the daily commute more convenient.
- The HMRL has submitted a proposal to the government and is currently awaiting approval. Once the green light is received, officials stated they are ready to invite global tenders to purchase the new train sets, the One India report added.

Government To Takeover Hyderabad Metro Project From L&T
- In parallel to the six-coach expansion plans, the process of the Hyderabad Metro project being taken over by the government from L&T is progressing, Times Now reported.
- Authorities stated that the takeover of Phase 1 is important 1, as bringing the project under complete government control is essential to securing the funding required for Phase 2.
- The government has officially appointed IDBI Capital as the financial advisor to assess key financial components of the metro project, including the metro assets, existing loans and liabilities and maintenance and operating expenses.
The IDBI Capital is likely to submit the report within a week, after which the government will take a decision on the takeover, Times Now report added.
