Hyderabad rains: Heavy rains lashed Hyderabad on Monday, bringing the city to its knees within an hours as waterlogging and massive traffic snarls were reported from several places. The torrential rains prompted Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to direct officials to be on alert.

According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, the highest rainfall of 151.5 mm was recorded in GHMC Ward office in Mahadevapuram. It was followed by CMTC premises, Banjara Hills 124.5 mm and Yousufguda Zonal Commissioner office 117 mm between 8.30 am and 7 pm on Monday.

In a post on X, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) said that rainfall of 7 to 8 centimeters was recorded within an hour in the city. Due to this, roads and low-lying areas were submerged.

The showers caused severe waterlogging on roads in different areas, restricting traffic movement. The commuters found tough time reaching home.

The rain put extra pressure on the traffic personnel of Hyderabad Police, who regulated the vehicular movement and cleared waterlogging to ensure smooth movement of vehicles. They were assisted by Disaster Response Force (DRF) personnel.

The Met centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad warned that thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in several districts between 8.30 pm on Monday and 8.30 am on August 5.

It also warned that heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in Medchal Malkajigiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal districts during this period.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in all districts of Telangana from 8.30 am on August 5 till 8.30 am on August 7, it said. Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur between 8.30 am on August 6 and 8.30 am on August 8, it added.

Following heavy rains in Hyderabad and other parts of the state, CM Reddy directed district collectors and officials of all departments to stay on alert, a release from CMO said.

The CM enquired the officials at the Secretariat about the situation in the heavy rain hit areas in the state. All the departments were instructed to work in coordination and take relief measures in low lying areas in the rain affected places.

Officials were also alerted to take up relief operations in the areas including Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), where the residential localities are flooded.

As per the IMD forecast, Telangana will see rains in the next three days. CM Reddy has instructed the collectors of all districts to review the situation with all departments regularly and take precautions to avoid property damage and loss of life during heavy rains.

He also instructed the officials to be available round-the-clock in the districts to deal with any situation arising due to rains for providing relief to the affected people.

The senior officials should review the situation with district collectors, the CM said, adding the Disaster Management teams should also be deployed for quick relief operations, the release added.
