Hyderabad-Vijayawada Highway Traffic: Traffic on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway has increased significantly as thousands of people travel to their hometowns for the Sankranti festival. Since Saturday morning, vehicles have been moving slowly from Abdullapurmet to Kothagudem, with long queues forming at the Pantangi Toll Plaza in Choutuppal.
Underpass Construction At Choutuppal Intersection
The situation has worsened due to underpass construction work at the Choutuppal intersection, causing a massive jam. Motorists heading towards Andhra Pradesh (AP) have been diverted through 10 toll booths, while vehicles entering Hyderabad are being directed through six gates. Police expect the congestion to intensify over the weekend as more people embark on their journeys.

Bus Stands Witness Heavy Crowds
The city’s major bus stands, including MGBS, JBS, Dilsukhnagar and LB Nagar junction, have also reported heavy crowds, adding to the festive rush. To ease the traffic burden, the police have issued alternative route suggestions for motorists.
Heading To AP Should Avoid THESE Routes
Drivers heading to AP are advised to avoid the Vijayawada Highway, especially the stretches near Hayathnagar, Abdullapurmet, Choutuppal and the Pantangi toll plazas, where severe bottlenecks are expected. Instead, motorists can take the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and exit at Bonguluru Gate (Exit 11) to reach Guntur via Ibrahimpatnam, Malkapuram, and Devarakonda.
Heading To Guntur, Macherla, Addanki; Check Alternative Routes
For those heading to Guntur, the recommended route is from Bonguluru (EXIT-12) via Brahimpatnam and Maal to Devarakonda. Motorists travelling to other destinations like Macherla, Addanki, Ongole and Nellore are advised to use the Narkatpally-Addanki highway to avoid potential traffic jams at Hayathnagar, Abdullapurmet, Choutuppal, and Pantangi toll plazas.
An alternative option is to take the Hyderabad-Nagarjunasagar Highway. Although this route is slightly longer, it allows drivers to bypass the worst of the traffic. Motorists can join the ORR and exit at Bonguluru Gate to access the Nagarjunasagar Highway and avoid delays.
With the Sankranti festival approaching, authorities urge all travellers to plan their journeys carefully and heed the advice of traffic officials to ensure a smoother ride.
