A group of people staged a protest at Tank Bund near Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad on Tuesday against the Telangana High Court’s order banning the immersion of Plaster of Paris (PoP) Ganesh idols in Hussain Sagar Lake. They demanded the withdrawal of the high court order and blocked the traffic on Tank Bund, staging a protest. 

The protestors raised slogans and decried injustice against Ganesh devotees by the state government and the high court for the order, blocking the traffic flow on Tank Bund. The police deployed at the spot cleared the road and restored normalcy avoiding any untoward incident.

The High Court refused to grant permission for the immersion of PoP Ganesh idols in Hussain Sagar Lake on Monday while hearing a petition filed by the Telangana Ganesh Murti Kalakaar Welfare Association. The association had challenged the guidelines of the Pollution Control Board (PCB) for a complete ban on PoP idols.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice NV Shravan Kumar, ordered Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand and civic authorities to ensure no PoP idol is immersed in the water body.

The court also directed the state government, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and the police to follow and implement its orders strictly.
