Hyderabad News: SpiceJet has announced plans to launch seaplane operations in India next year, aiming to connect some of the country's most remote and beautiful locations. The airline has secured rights to operate seaplane services on 20 routes, including popular destinations like Lakshadweep, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Shillong. SpiceJet is working to establish these connections as the necessary infrastructure becomes available.

SpiceJet’s Chairman and Managing Director, Ajay Singh, expressed gratitude for the support from Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister K. Rammohan Naidu in making this project a reality. The airline has already demonstrated a seaplane flight from Vijayawada's Prakasam Barrage to the Srisailam Dam.

Avani Singh, CEO of Spice Shuttle, stated that seaplanes could revolutionise transport in India, where diverse landscapes such as coastlines, islands and river systems often pose infrastructure challenges. The airline has been actively involved in seaplane trials at various locations, providing essential engineering and logistical support for De Havilland Canada seaplanes.

In addition to the seaplane project, SpiceJet has announced the expansion of its domestic network with eight new flights set to launch on November 15. These new routes will connect Jaipur with Varanasi, Amritsar and Ahmedabad and will also link Ahmedabad with Pune.

Additionally, SpiceJet has launched UDAN flights linking Shivamogga in Karnataka to Chennai and Hyderabad, as well as introducing daily double flights between Chennai and Kochi, boosting connectivity to major regional and metropolitan cities. The airline will operate these routes using its 78-seater Q400 aircraft.

However, SpiceJet continues to face financial difficulties. As of August this year, its share of the domestic passenger market fell to 2.3 per cent, down from 7.3 per cent in January last year, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airline reported a 19.65 per cent decrease in consolidated profit for the April-June quarter, earning Rs158.75 crore compared to Rs 197.58 crore during the same period last year.
