Hyderabad Metro: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday to push for the Centre’s approval of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II project, a critical urban infrastructure initiative valued at Rs 24,269 crore. The proposed expansion spans 76.4 km across five new corridors and marks a significant step toward enhancing public transportation and regional connectivity in the city.

In a detailed presentation to the Prime Minister and later at a separate meeting held at Bharat Mandapam, CM Reddy sought Union Cabinet approval for the project, underscoring its importance to Hyderabad’s growing urban population. The current Phase-I of the metro, covering 69 km over three corridors, was completed at a cost of Rs 22,000 crore. No further expansion had been undertaken in the past decade, he noted, pointing to the urgency of the Phase-II development.

The funding structure proposed includes an 18% contribution from the Centre (Rs 4,230 crore), 30 per cent from the Telangana state government (Rs 7,313 crore), and the remaining 52 per cent (Rs 11,693 crore) to be raised through debt financing.

“The Hyderabad Metro Phase-II has been meticulously planned to meet the city’s long-term transit needs. The previous government did not pursue any expansion for 10 years, and we are now submitting comprehensive proposals to bridge that gap,” said Reddy.

He also referenced other urban metro approvals granted recently, citing Chennai Metro Phase-II (Rs 63,246 crore approved in October 2024), and Bangalore Metro Phase-II and III (Rs 14,788 crore and ₹15,611 crore, approved in 2021 and 2024 respectively) as precedents for central support.

The Telangana government had initially submitted its proposals to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on November 4, 2024, and has since responded to all queries raised by the ministry

Reddy sought approval for the Regional Ring Road around Hyderabad, covering northern and southern corridors. The northern stretch from Sangareddy to Choutuppal includes key towns like Narsapur, Toopran, Gajwel, Jagdevpur, and Bhongir. Land acquisition is underway, with 90% of awards sent to NHAI and tenders issued. The CM urged simultaneous development of both corridors due to heavy traffic on the Outer Ring Road, which sees over one lakh vehicles daily.

"Unless both parts are taken up simultaneously, the roads cannot be put to efficient use. Delayed implementation of the southern part will lead to cost escalation," he said.

The state proposed a Regional Ring Railway alongside the 370-km ring road and a greenfield expressway from Bandar port to Hyderabad’s dry port to boost the pharmaceutical sector. Highlighting Telangana’s semiconductor ecosystem, home to global R&D centers like AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, and manufacturers such as Foxconn and Kaynes, Reddy sought the Centre’s support for India’s Semiconductor Mission (ISM) projects.

"Telangana offers seismic safety, industrial land, skilled workforce and strong infrastructure making it ideal for semiconductor investments aligned with the target of USD 500 billion electronics production by 2030," he said.
