A strange marriage ceremony took place in the Komaram Bheem Asifabad district of Telangana, where a man married two women simultaneously in the same ‘mandap’. Suryadev was in love with two women at a time and decided to marry both of them at the same ceremony.
According to a report by NDTV, Suryadev, a resident of Gumnoor village in Lingapur mandal, said that he was in a relationship with Lal Devi and Jhalkari Devi and, hence, married both. The invitation card to the ceremony had the names of both the bride, who married a single man in a grand ceremony.
All three performed the wedding rituals with both women holding the hands of the man in the presence of families, relatives and villagers with ‘dhol’ playing in the background.
The trio decided to marry and live together, but the elders of the village were against the decision initially; however, eventually, they accepted their wish and helped them get married.
It is important to note that the practice of polygamy is illegal for Hindus in India. The Hindu Marriage Act of 1955, which applies to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs, prohibits polygamy. A polygamous Hindu marriage is null and void. While the punishment specified in Sections 494 and 495 is applicable.
It is not the first time that such an incident has taken place. In 2021, another man in Telangana's Adilabad district married two women in one 'mandap'. The ceremony, in Utnoor Mandal, took place with the consent of all three families, reports said.
