Later he pursued his undergraduate degree in History through sports quota at St. Stephen's College as his 12th marks were not strong enough. He won a national shooting competition there and many awards by 1989.

After the assassination of his father Rajiv Gandhi, in 1991, Rahul Gandhi left St. Stephen College and moved on to Harvard University, and due to security reasons, he was relocated to Rollins College in Florida. Later he pursued a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Development Studies from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1995.
