LGBTQ Community In India:  A New India is all about breaking societal norms that no longer serve anyone while holding on to our culture and tradition, which instils values of acceptance and kindness. As we step into a more modern and evolving world, people are embracing their real selves wholeheartedly, without any fear. In ancient India, people dealt with this complex phenomenon of being in different bodies and having different sexual orientations, In simpler words, man attracted to another man, was something extremely out of the box for people to accept in ancient India, however, it was all science and people had no control over it. Now after decades of struggle, people with different sexual identities are growing as an LGBTQ community across the globe.

At the initial rise of the queer community, it was just LGBT, which used to stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. With The added Q, which stands for ‘queer,’ more Variations like LGBTQIA and LGBTQIA+ also do exist. The plus sign represents all other gender identities and sexual orientations that letters and words cannot yet fully describe.

The LGBTQ community is connected by shared cultural experiences of prejudice, discrimination, and collective awareness of historical and ongoing oppression, which a lot of them face in this modern era as well, from social media trolling to bullying in schools and colleges. The LGBTQ movement is needed to secure human rights for all members of the community and to build a nation that works on inbuild values of acceptance and kindness.

Let’s take a look at the in-detail breakdown of each letter LGBTQ:

1. Lesbian:

Women attracted to other women. With the western-influence, some Indian lesbians may prefer to identify as gay or as gay women.

2. Gay:

Men attracted to other men are called Gay. Though, nowadays, gay can be used for both men and women.

3. Bisexual:

People attracted to both men and women. The more trendy term across social media platforms is ‘Bi’.

4. Transgender:

People whose sex assigned at birth doesn't align with their internal gender identity. These people mostly opt for gender transplant surgeries, which are not very pocket-friendly.

5. Queer/Questioning:

The term ‘Queer’ is an umbrella term that is used for sexual and gender minorities. Sometimes the Q in LGBTQ also stands for ‘Questioning’, which simply describes that someone is still exploring their sexuality.

6. Asexual:

The Asexual people are the ones who do not experience any sexual attraction to anyone. However, it is still an umbrella term.

7. Non-binary: 

This adjective describes a person who does not want to label its gender, it does not signify as male or female and uses many different terms to describe themselves.
