Top 10 Dirtiest Cities In India: India's annual cleanliness assessment, Swachh Survekshan 2025, reveals a harsh truth as many cities remain dirty, even in 2025. The latest survey reveals some of the country’s most important urban areas continue to fail at handling waste, toilets or overall hygiene. Data shows ten cities scored worst in sanitation, ranking among the top 10 dirtiest cities. This ranking is a wake-up call for both common people and city authorities.

Things were made worse by inadequate trash disposal, piles of overflowing trash cans, clogged waterways, damaged sewers, a disorganised city spread, and a lack of awareness among locals. Large cities and industrial areas are not the only places that become filthy. Results demonstrate clean streets don't rely on income or area alone - they come from smart control, as well as the daily behaviours of locals.

As India advances with ambitious development plans, the 2025 survey urges renewed focus on sanitation, waste disposal, and public hygiene. Because at the end of the day, a clean city is not just nice — it is essential for health, pride, and quality of life.

Top 10 Dirtiest Cities in India in 2025 — Why They are on the List

1. Madurai

Madurai ranked last in India's 2025 cleanliness rating. Its method of waste decomposition is weak, while garbage management systems are very poor. Because garbage is not routinely picked up, piles of litter accumulate on the streets. Poor hygiene habits also contributed significantly to its downfall.

2. Ludhiana

Ludhiana, known for its factories and busy streets, ranks number two. Due to the rapidly growing industry and urban expansion in the city, civic infrastructure has been overwhelmed, resulting in garbage buildup, pollution and a weak disposal system.

3. Chennai

In the list of the dirtiest cities in 2025, Chennai comes on third. Due to infrequent garbage pickup, waste accumulates in numerous locations. Streets frequently flood during rainy seasons due to ineffective drainage systems. These persistent issues negatively impact the city's general cleanliness.

Ranchi ranked fourth in the ranking. Open dumping of waste, poor sewage treatment and inadequate disposal facilities have led to its low rating.

5. Bengaluru

Bengaluru, once known as India’s Garden City, ranks fifth on the list of dirtiest cities by 2025. Fast growth without control has taken a toll - trash piles up in dumps and an overcrowded town, making things tough. Public areas suffer from a lack of care due to weak management.

6. Dhanbad

Dhanbad, renowned for mining and factories, ranks sixth on the dirtiest cities in the Swachh Sarvekshan survey 2025. Bad public services, including improper trash disposal alongside factory pollution, result in unsanitary surroundings and health risks.

7. Faridabad

Ranked seventh, Faridabad’s cleanliness difficulties originate from growing urbanisation, industrial pollution and ineffective waste and sewage management.

Greater Mumbai ranks eighth on the list of dirtiest cities. Being a huge Indian city packed with people, it generates tons of trash daily, while poor disposal practices and weak cleaning setups exacerbate problems.

9. Srinagar

Srinagar is ninth on the 2025 Dirty Cities list. The city struggles with outdated sewage systems, inconsistent waste management, and challenges in handling waste generated by residents and tourists.

10. Delhi

Despite being a major metropolitan city, India’s capital, Delhi, suffers from a sanitation score due to mixing of waste, lack of effective waste treatment and overwhelmed civic infrastructure, unable to cope with high population and waste load.
