If you’re in the mood for a weekend getaway, Nainital in the devbhoomi (land of the gods) of Uttarakhand is an undisputed choice. Nainital is a popular destination for anyone looking to escape the rising AQI levels and pollution in Delhi, and instead enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains. With its cool weather, serene lakes, and peaceful atmosphere, Nainital has something for everyone. Whether you're in the mood to relax by the lake, explore the hills, or simply take in the views, this place has a lot to offer. If you are planning a weekend trip, here are some must-visit places in Nainital.

1. Mall Road

If you're traveling by bus, you’ll be dropped off at Kathgodam. From there, you can take a cab or a bus to reach Tallital, Nainital, where you can start by visiting the famous Mall Road. This is the main street in Nainital, full of shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s the best place to shop for souvenirs, woolens, or simply take a leisurely stroll. You can also stop at one of the many cafes to enjoy a hot cup of tea while watching the world go by. In my opinion, it’s like a mini Kashmir. It’s reminiscent of Srinagar, with its Dal Lake, French cafes, and Kashmiri handlooms. You’ll also see beautiful maple trees, which evoke the autumn vibe of Kashmir. Tallital is a bustling district with vintage British-era offices, hotels, and a handful of Hindu temples.

2. Naini lake

No visit to Nainital is complete without spending time by the Naini Lake. One must take a boat ride, which goes all the way to the Naina Devi Temple. Naini Tal, also known as Naini Lake, is a beautiful natural freshwater lake located near Mall Road in Nainital. It’s believed to have been formed through tectonic activity and was originally almost circular. Over time, frequent landslides have changed its shape, giving it a crescent-like form, with an outflow at the southeastern end. According to Hindu mythology, the lake is said to have formed where the eyes of the goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva was carrying her body after her death. This spot is not just home to any ordinary temple but is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, sacred sites in Hinduism. The lake is full of fish, and visitors can enjoy feeding them or take a leisurely rowboat or paddleboat ride. It’s a peaceful experience, with the cool breeze, misty weather, and stunning mountain views all around. This shimmering, crescent-shaped lake is the heart of the town. Rent a rowboat or paddleboat, and drift along, enjoying the cool breeze and the stunning mountain views. The ride costs around Rs 300-400 as per government policies. It’s the perfect way to relax and soak in the natural beauty.

3. Naina Devi Temple

After your boat ride, head to Naina Devi Temple, an important religious site for Hindus. It’s believed to be the place where the eyes of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva carried her body. The temple offers a peaceful atmosphere and fantastic views of the lake and surrounding hills. It’s a must-see, even if you’re not particularly religious. You’ll also find smaller temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and other deities. Once you’re done, you can shop just outside at the Tibetan market, where you’ll find souvenirs, shawls, and handicrafts. Grab a bite at one of the French-themed cafés to enjoy the view of the lake and mountains.

Wind up your day by taking a stroll around the Tallital market at night, enjoying the serene surroundings. Shop and indulge in some Pahadi cuisine.

The next day, visit the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram, also known as Kainchi Dham, a famous destination not only in India but internationally. Located in the Kumaon Hills of Uttarakhand, Kainchidham is a beautiful, secluded mountain ashram. The first temple was inaugurated in June 1964 and is approximately 38 km from Nainital. One can take a bus from Tallital bus stand which will cost around Rs 50. Steve Jobs, the former CEO of Apple, visited the ashram in search of enlightenment when he was 18, though Neem Karoli Baba had passed away a year earlier. In 2015, when PM Narendra Modi visited Facebook’s headquarters in the US, Mark Zuckerberg shared that Jobs had recommended him visiting the Kainchi Ashram for self-reflection. Zuckerberg himself visited in 2008, saying, “I traveled for almost a month, experiencing how people connected with each other. It reinforced for me the importance of what we were doing, and that’s something I’ve carried with me as we built Facebook.”

Neem Karoli Baba, who was known for his message of selfless service to others, attracted a number of Western celebrities, including Julia Roberts, Larry Page of Google, and Jeff Skoll of eBay. He didn’t follow any formal philosophy but encouraged his followers to focus on helping others. His teachings were widely spread by his devotee, Richard Alpert (Ram Dass).
