E3 countries include global powers -France, Germany, and the UK. The three big European countries that team up for bigger global challenges. The E3 group was formed to develop a collaborative strategy for foreign policies. E3 countries respond swiftly in the context of international diplomacy, being the core nations of Europe, unlike the other 27-member states in the European Union. E3 originated in 2003 when Iran’s nuclear ambitions loomed during the invasion of Iraq led by the US. Foreign Ministers from France, Germany, and the UK visited Tehran in October for direct discussions, seeking solutions related to halting nuclear proliferation instead of executing forceful approaches, according to the ukandeu.ac.uk.
Later, E3+3 originated in 2006 and now includes the other global nations-the United States, Russia, and China, as per the data by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. In later years, the E3's main objective became to neutralise internal differences, formalise its functioning, and to become the backbone of European diplomacy.
Major Diplomatic Achievements
The E3 group was behind the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) negotiations, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, that constrained Iran’s activities in exchange for lifting sanctions. This formed a common front between Europe and the U.S. Even after the trigger of Brexit, cooperation in the field of security continued in the E3.
Areas Of Influence Of E3
Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, Middle East issues - Iran, Syria, Libya, and the recent humanitarian crises in Gaza.
Global challenges encompass broader scenarios like emerging crises in Moldova, the Sahel, and South China Sea tensions, among others.
Frameworking an EU foreign policy, shaping Germany's strategic role, and managing US influence.
- Capabilities based on potential growth to the E5 level, with added Italy and Poland.
