East India Crime Rate Index:  The eastern part of India, which includes states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur, and Nagaland, offers a varied picture of India and not just in the context of culture and history but also in crime rates. It is important for policymakers, locals, and intending immigrants to know the crime rates for these states. Here’s a list of the eastern Indian states with the highest crime rates, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the NCRB’s 2024 crime report.

Understanding Crime Rate Metrics In India:

In India, crime rates are usually measured as the number of crimes per 100,000 population, which is a standardised method for the comparison of different Indian states with distinctive population sizes. The Crime Rate Per Capita, usually reported as crimes per 1,000 or 100,000 population, gives more raw figures and provides a more realistic picture of safety in India. The increasing tourism and immigration in the eastern states of India make it more essential to know about the highest crime rates, which also highlight the effectiveness of law enforcement, hot-spotting, and other safety concerns that citizens might face. However, it is worth mentioning that underreporting and varying legal definitions can impact the comparability of crime rates between states.
