This location is in the Ramanathapuram district, which is adjacent to the sacred city of Rameswaram. Before the route reaches the point where the land nearly touches Sri Lanka, it runs along the coast.  The area is bordered by the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

Dhanushkodi is also known as a ghost town since it was a thriving town, but it was destroyed by a cyclone in 1964. The town was then declared uninhabitable.
