Diwali, one of India's most cherished holidays, is also known as the festival of lights. It symbolises the victory of knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and light over darkness. To bring success and prosperity into their homes, people worship the Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and abundance, on this auspicious day. But as you may have noticed, during the Diwali Puja, Goddess Lakshmi is always worshipped alongside Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.

This combination has significant mythological and spiritual meaning in addition to being a custom. Ganesha makes sure that success and wisdom go hand in hand with the wealth that Lakshmi showers upon his devotees. When combined, they represent the ideal harmony between worldly wealth and inner tranquillity. Their combined worship serves as a reminder that while success combined with humility can bring true happiness, wealth without wisdom can cause chaos.

Mythological Reason Behind Joint Worship

Hindu scriptures offer multiple explanations for the joint worship of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali night. According to a well-known legend, the Goddess Lakshmi once visited Lord Vishnu and expressed her desire for a son.

Lord Vishnu advised her to adopt Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, as her own. Since then, Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi—who is believed to have taken him in as a son—have been admired for their wealth and intelligence.

According to a different belief, Lord Ganesha makes sure that devotees use their wealth wisely when Goddess Lakshmi bestows it upon them. Without Ganesha's guidance, having money can result in conceit or bad luck. Therefore, both are used in tandem to attain balanced success.

Spiritual Significance During Diwali

To invite joy, peace, and prosperity, devotees light lamps and perform the Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja on Diwali night. It is said that Lord Ganesha bestows blessings on people who start their endeavours with wisdom and purity, while Goddess Lakshmi visits homes that are tidy and well-lit. Good luck for the upcoming year can be obtained by chanting mantras and praying to both deities at once. The beginning of a fresh financial and spiritual journey full of abundance, wisdom, and peace is symbolised by their combined blessings.
