Why Planes Don't Fly Over Antarctica: Air travel has connected the world and shortened the distance like never before. Today, planes fly over oceans, deserts, mountains and even the North Pole to cut travel time and save on fuel. However, Antarctica, the world's largest ice continent, has no planes flying over it; instead, it could offer shorter flight routes between continents like South America, Australia and Africa. 1. Extreme Weather Conditions

The weather in Antarctica is the harshest on Earth, where temperatures drop as low as -60 degrees Centigrade. Sudden snowstorms and strong winds are common. Weather conditions change fast and are unpredictable. These conditions make flying extremely risky for commercial aircraft.

2. ETOPS Regulation due to Lack of Emergency Airports

One of the major reasons planes avoid flying over Antarctica is the ETOPS(Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) regulation, because there are no emergency landing airports. Commercial flights must always stay within a safe distance of airports as per the ETOPS rule, which specifies rules requiring aircraft to stay within a safe distance of diversion airports.

Antarctica has few runways, most of which are for research purposes. The runways are not capable of handling commercial aircraft. Landing in case of engine or medical emergencies is nearly impossible.

3. Risk Due to Extreme Cold

The extremely cold weather impacts aeroplane systems, such as Jet fuel can become thick or frozen, Hydraulic systems could fail, and Metal could become brittle. Modern aeroplanes are built to function under cold conditions, but Antarctica is beyond the limits within which aeroplanes can safely fly for an extended period.

4. Limited Search and Rescue Support

If an aeroplane experiences problems:

* The rescue efforts in Antarctica are very challenging.

* There are no other cities, hospitals, or rescue services in the vicinity.

* Harsh terrain causes delays in responding to emergencies. 

Passenger safety would be jeopardised in a location that remote.

5. No Economic Benefit

Airlines prefer routes that are: Fuel-efficient, time-saving and profitable routes. Flying through Antarctica is not going to give any significant savings in terms of travel time and consumes extra fuel.

6. Strict Aviation Safety Rules

International guidelines for aviation provision include: Sufficient communication facilities, Reliable navigation aids and Facilities for emergency support. None of these exist in the infrastructure for Antarctica to support commercial airline travel to and within the region.

Are Any Flights Allowed Over Antarctica?

Yes, but only for: Research missions, Military planes and special tourist flights with extensive safety arrangements. Normal passenger flights are avoided for safety purposes.
