A football coach named John Beam, who featured on Netflix’s Last Chance U and the Laney College athletic director, has passed away. He died a day after being shot on the Oakland, California, campus, police announced. A man has been taken into custody in related to connection with the shooting of Beam. He was shot on the college campus. The authorities have released limited information about the circumstances of the attack. It marks the second shooting at the Oakland school in 48 hours. A Skyline High School student was injured in a case a day earlier and is now in stable condition.

Local leaders expressed concern over their violence. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee called the late coach a pillar of the community and described him as ‘giant’ and stated that he was a mentor who shaped generations of young athletes. She said, “For over 40 years, he has shaped leaders on and off the field, and our community is shaken alongside his family.”

John Beam got national recognition when Laney College and its Eagles football program were featured in Last Chance U, it was docuseries which is about junior college athletes striving for academic and athletic redemption. Beam’s influence extended was far beyond the show. May former players credit him for helping them reach the next level. Nahshon and Rejzohn Wright, are now playing for the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. While reacting to the news, Rejzohn wrote on social media, “You mean the world to me,” with a picture of the coach. Nahshon shared a photo with a broken heart emoji.

Earlier, in a statement talking about Beam’s condition, Peralta Community College District spokesperson Mark Johnson said, “The Peralta community is devastated by his shooting and deeply concerned for his well-being. We are stunned and heartbroken that such violence has touched our campus.” The local police have not shared any further details about the suspect or a possible motive. The investigation into this matter is currently underway.
