Singer and rapper Akon, known for his chart-busting music, has made headlines for his personal life. His wife, Tomeka Thiam, has filed for divorce from the musician. This comes just before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary. The couple got married on September 15, 1966. Thaim filed for divorce from the star, citing 'irreconcilable differences', according to PEOPLE. Let's read on to find out what else she mentioned in the papers.

Singer Akon's Wife Tomeka Thiam Files For Divorce

Tomeka Thaim filed for divorce from Akon on Thursday, September 11, citing irreconcilable differences, according to the documents, obtained by PEOPLE. She listed their official date of separation as “TBD,” and also mentioned the custody of one child, their 17-year-old daughter, Journey, whom she shares with the Star.

According to the publication, Akon's wife has requested joint legal custody of Journey, but has asked for physical custody of their daughter, with Akon being granted visitation rights. She also requested spousal support and asked the court not to grant the 'Chammak Challo' singer the same.

In 2022, the singer spoke about his beliefs on polygamy on The Zeze Mills Show. He revealed that he has nine children and considers polygamy to be part of his "African culture".

He said, “[Polygamy is] part of our culture. Absolutely. For me, it looks normal, because it’s culture for us. We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. See, the flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account.”

The singer also said it is his job to be there for all nine of his children and raising them is his responsibility.

In the same interview, he stated, "My job ain't to be doing all that extra stuff and these holidays and recitals. While I’m taking care of my responsibility to make sure the family has a roof over their head and food, if I have the time to do that and show love, yes, I will do that. Communication allows me to be there every day. That’s what my FaceTime phone is for.”

Akon is a celebrated rapper-singer and has delivered several hit songs, including Smack That, Lonely, Right Now, Beautiful and many others. He made his Bollywood debut with the songs Chammak Challo and Criminal in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer sci-fi film Ra.One in 2011.
