Harry Potter star Maggie Smith dies: British actress Maggie Smith passed away at the age of 89. The late actress was known for her roles in Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and more. Her sons announced in a statement that she died ‘peacefully’ on Friday morning. The news was announced via a statement by her sons’ publicist Clair Dobbs. 

The statement read, “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.”

Dame Maggie Smith, a British acting legend, enjoyed a seven-decade career on stage and screen, earning numerous accolades, including two Oscars, five BAFTAs, four Emmys, three Golden Globes, and a Tony Award. A Triple Crown of Acting winner, Smith began her stage career at Oxford Playhouse (1952) and Broadway's New Faces of '56. She became a leading figure in British theatre alongside Judi Dench, working with the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company.

Maggie Smith won two Oscars for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978). She received nominations for Othello, Travels with My Aunt, A Room with a View, and Gosford Park.

Her iconic roles include Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey, earning three Primetime Emmys. Smith was honored with BAFTA and British Film Institute Fellowships and made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990.
