Massachusetts plane crash:In a tragic incident early Monday morning, a small private aircraft crashed onto Route 195 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, killing two people on board and injuring one person on the ground. The crash, which occurred amid heavy rain and strong winds brought by a nor’easter, forced the closure of the busy interstate in both directions for several hours.

Fiery Wreckage Halts Traffic

According to the Massachusetts State Police, the fixed-wing aircraft went down around 8:15 a.m. and burst into flames upon impact. Thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing over the highway as motorists captured videos showing blazing debris scattered across the median. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where firefighters battled flames amid intense wind gusts and rain.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation confirmed that all westbound lanes near Exit 19 were shut down, while eastbound traffic experienced major delays. Officials warned commuters to avoid the area as cleanup and recovery operations continued through the day.

Possible Attempted Landing At Nearby Airport

Preliminary reports suggest the plane may have been attempting to land at New Bedford Regional Airport, located just a few miles away. However, authorities said the pilot did not appear to have filed a flight plan or notified the airport of passenger details.

“There is no immediate information available on the pilot or any passengers on board,” the state police said in a statement. “The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been notified and will take over the investigation.”

At the time of the crash, the National Weather Service reported that a powerful nor’easter was sweeping through southeastern Massachusetts, bringing wind speeds of up to 40 mph (64 kph) and heavy rainfall. Investigators are examining whether weather conditions played a role in the crash.

A witness told local station WBZ-TV that the aircraft “appeared to be struggling against the wind before it went down.” Photos from the scene showed charred wreckage on the grassy divider and a damaged vehicle nearby, though it remains unclear if the car was struck during the crash.

Investigation Underway Amid Government Shutdown

Due to the ongoing US government shutdown, both the FAA and NTSB said they were operating with limited capacity and could not immediately provide detailed responses to media inquiries. Despite the shutdown, local and state investigators are coordinating with federal teams to secure the crash site and preserve evidence.
