Dallas Airport flight delays: A major telecom outage caused chaos at Dallas airports on Friday, delaying over 1,800 flights and forcing hundreds of cancellations, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The disruptions affected Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field (DAL), leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
What Happened In Dallas?
• Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field (DAL) experienced ground stops due to communication failures.
• FAA halted departures at DFW until 11 p.m. ET and DAL until at least 8:45 p.m. ET.
• Over 1,800 flights were delayed, while hundreds were canceled across both airports.
• American Airlines canceled more than 200 flights and delayed over 500, affecting nearly a quarter of its daily schedule.
• Southwest Airlines, headquartered at Love Field, faced delays on more than 1,100 flights, around 27 per cent of its schedule.
• The disruptions primarily affected Dallas TRACON, the Terminal Radar Approach Control facility that handles arrivals and departures at both airports.
• Controllers at Love Field reported losing all radar and phone communications, halting all departures until systems were restored.
• Smaller regional airports, including Fort Worth Alliance, McKinney National, and Fort Worth Meacham International, also experienced temporary ground stops.
• FAA is coordinating with the local telecom provider to identify and fix the equipment failure.
• The outage follows a year of persistent technical issues in the US air traffic control system, prompting a $12.5 billion modernization plan approved by Congress in July.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz assured Texans that his office was closely monitoring the situation. “We have been in touch with the FAA and airlines and urge the flying public to remain patient as officials work to resolve the issue,” he said.

Friday also saw an unusual spike in drone traffic. Walmart, in collaboration with rapper Cardi B, set a Guinness World Record for “most deliveries by UAV drones in one hour,” delivering 176 copies of Cardi B’s latest album. While the FAA has not confirmed if the drone surge contributed to the telecom issues, it added to the busy airspace over Dallas.

With DFW handling roughly 1,900 daily flights and 200,000 passengers, the outage caused widespread disruptions. Airlines are working to reschedule flights and accommodate affected travelers, while the FAA continues to coordinate with the local telecom provider to restore full communications.
